Mental or psychic abilities: She is very intelligent, but has no psychic abilities. I doubt she has defenses against it, since her canon has no supernatural elements and she doesn't believe in them; so having such a thing directed at her will catch her off guard.
Magical/supernatural abilities: No such thing!
Relationships: I'd say yes but it's gonna be HARD with her. She doesn't really show interest in romance, though she has a weird thing going on with one of her superiors at court.
IC triggers: Do NOT talk about The Freak Strategist aka her biological father. She will pretend he doesn't exist. Also she has a strong sense of justice, so she may react strongly when she sees someone do wrong.

As for triggers that might come up playing with her: illness, murder, prostitution, human trafficking, indentured servitude, castration, sexual violence, child abuse including emotional, physical and sexual, self harm, suicide, hints at cannibalism (it's a running gag that Maomao's dad firmly told her to stay away from corpses For Reasons)

Not exactly a trigger but: Maomao is a keen observer of others, including their physical attributes... particularly women's chests. This is opt in so tell me if you'd like Maomao to do that or nah.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

VISUAL: Maomao is short and scrawny with no bust to speak of. She has a heart-shaped face on which she draws freckles to deflect unwanted attention. Her arms are usually covered by sleeves, but if they are every uncovered, you might notice various scars from her medical experiments along them.
AURAL: She speaks with a fairly flat affect, which changes when she is really angry or when her special interest is activated.
OLFACTORY: Generally clean, possibly medicinal or of alcohol used as a disinfectant. (Sometimes, too infrequently in her opinion, also alcohol used as a drink.)
DEMEANOUR: Maomao is not very emotionally expressive most of the time, though she is not unfriendly. She can be fairly blunt, but mostly knows when to rein it in, as she has a keen awareness of the stratification of her society and her place in it, which is very low in her opinion. If she really doesn't like you, it tends to make itself known in her expressions, though; she is very good at looking at people as if they were a worm.

She's generally very curious and observant of her surroundings, paying special attention to the appearance of people around her, particularly women's busts. Feel free to contact me if you would/wouldn't like her to make such observations about your character!

When encountering medicines or poisons, particularly rare ones, her demeanor will suddenly become euphoric, and she may perform her little "happy dance" regardless whether anyone is looking.

As befitting her name, the narrative frequently compares her to a cat.

Motivations
 Maomao mostly wants to be left alone and pursue medicine, but she is often hampered by her own incorrigibly curious nature.

Handling Conflict
 Maomao doesn't back down from a conflict; however, how she acts depends greatly on how she views her station vis-a-vis her opponent. She'd like to keep her head firmly attached to her neck, thank you very much.

Description
 Maomao is a very petite young woman and often described as fairly plain; an effect she deliberately enhances by painting freckles on her face on the regular. As someone of humble origins, she wears simple clothing. On the rare occasions that she dresses up, she is very pretty.

First Impressions
 Most people would probably not pay Maomao much mind if seeing her on the street, though if they're familiar with the rear palace, they might recognize when she's dressed as Consort Gyokuyou's lady-in-waiting.

history

Event

Maomao was raised in the pleasure district of the capital of the country of Li, which is a fictionalized version of ancient China. There, she was adopted as a small girl by a doctor who taught her everything she needs to know about medicine. She showed a particular aptitude and interest for the subject from a young age, even going so far as to conduct medical experiments on herself. Some scars left from these experiments are still visible on her arm.

In the beginning of the series, Maomao was out searching for ingredients when she was captured by a band of human traffickers and sold to the Imperial palace; specifically to the rear palace, where the Emperor's concubines live. There, she was put to work as a maidservant. However, when the emperor's infant son died and his mother took ill as well, Maomao can't quite keep herself from sticking her nose where it doesn't belong and attracts the notice of Jinshi, a high-ranking eunuch who manages much of the rear palace's daily business. From there on out, he requests her help solving mysteries again and again.

Origin

Later in the series, we learn that Maomao is the biological child of a high-ranking court official and a courtesan who worked at the pleasure house where she spent much of her childhood. Soon after her birth, her mother became severely ill in a way that affected her mind; leading her to a dramatic act: she cut off a segment of her infant daugher's finger and sent it to the child's father. The father couldn't afford to buy her out and so did not return, leaving Maomao to be adopted by his uncle. Maomao loathes her biological father and rejects him as a parent, and has no particular attachment to her mother.

Maomao has a vast knowledge of not just medicinal ingredients, but illnesses and curious medical phenomenons as well. Her knowledge is about as extensive as that of someone living before the invention of modern medicine could get.

Logic
 Equipped with her knowledge and a great aptitude for logical thinking, Maomao is often able to solve mysteries where people around her are stumped. This garners her attention at court again and again.

World-wise
 Growing up in the pleasure district has left Maomao fairly disillusioned about life, and surprisingly knowledgeable about intimate matters. She's not particularly shy about it, though she has no interest in sex herself.
